About Ellesmere - 'Shropshire's Lakeland' - Meres, Mosses and Canals
Ellesmere is situated in the Welsh borderland of North Shropshire. Ellesmere centre is a small market town nestling between the Mere (Ellesmere lake) and the Llangollen (Canal) Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal and the Ellesmere Wharf Arm (Ellesmere Canal).
On the A528 between Whitchurch and Oswestry / A495 Shrewsbury / Overton Road.
Beside The (Ellesmere) Mere there are eight other meres nearby: Blake Mere, Colemere, Crosemere, Hanmer Mere, Kettle Mere, Newtonmere, Sweatmere and Whitemere.
The church of St Mary, overlooking the Mere, was built by the Knights of St John in 1225.
Ellesmere Castle was an 11th century motte and bailey style castle, likely built by either Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury or his son Roger the Poitevin. Only its earthworks now remain at Castlefields overlooking the Mere. The top of the motte is home today to a bowling green, which still commands fine views.
There are a number of circular and short walks that take in the canal towpath, the Castlefields, the Arboretum and, for the more energetic, Ellesmere's sister mere Colemere is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and provides a circular walk through woodland glades right alongside the water's edge.

Ellesmere Triathlon - June - The Shropshire Triathlon is an annual sporting event held in the County's northern town of Ellesmere. The event has grown rapidly since the first race which was held in September 1992.
Ellesmere Food and Drink Festival June - A 2 day annual event where you can enjoy the food and drink from in and around the Ellesmere area. A not-for-profit food and drink festival. Ellesmere Regatta - July - Where boating teams from across North Shropshire descend on the largest of the town's Mere for exciting races.
Ellesmere Carnival - August - Ellesmere Carnival is traditionally held on the August bank holiday Saturday every year. The parades take place through the town's streets between 13.00 and 20.30. Free entertainment is provided in the Cremorne Gardens on the Mere throughout the day.
Ellesmere Flower and Produce Show - Usually in September - The show is organised by Ellesmere & District Gardeners Club.
